As the Indian Prime Minister's visit to the UK coincided with Diwali, the Festival of Light, Mark Cuniffe designed a spectacular show at Wembley Stadium to celebrate.

Utilising LED screens, moving lights and 26 DB1s, he created a show fit for, well, two Prime Ministers.
The DB1s were controlled using the Avolites AI Media Server and Tiger Touch and operated by our own Chris Ewington.

The show was broadcast live to millions around the world and Mark and the team were very pleased with the additional effects from the DB1s.

Chris Ewington and newly appointed US distributors, Inner Circle Distribution, have taken the DB1 on a whirlwind mini tour of the USA on the lead up to LDI. They are visiting several cities across the States and there are opportunities to see demos and even be hands-on under the helpful eye of Chris and the ICD team.

Manchester International Festival 10 x 10 dance event July 2015

The new i-Pix DB1 video / beam light source made its UK dance event debut at the 2015 Manchester International Festival (MIF) 10x10 Day and Night, a special two night collaboration between MIF and the Warehouse Project (WHP) to celebrate 10 years of both events in Manchester.

Lighting specialist dbn, which is based in the city, provided lighting and visuals. When the organisers confirmed they wanted something inventive and different, the db1s were proposed by dbn and i-Pix’s Chris Ewington.

Jon Drape, MD of Ground Control which co-ordinates all production for the WHP organisers, commented: “We've been waiting to get the db1s on a show since [Ewington] first invited us to see the fixture in development. The unique collaboration between [WHP and MIF] was the perfect opportunity. The db1 is a ground-breaking product and, like the audiences, we were completely blown away with its impact.”

The db1s were used on the second of the two 12 hour events, which ran from 2 pm to 2 am at a former train station in the heart of the city, the Mayfield Depot.

“It was a perfect opportunity to show the versatility and high impact of the fixture,” commented db1 inventor Ewington, who was delighted with the results.

A total of 23 db1s were arranged in four pyramids stacks on the main stage for the evening which was headlined by Carl Craig and Mike Banks. The db1s were run as both a lighting and a video fixture.

Video sources were fed into them via an Avolites Ai Infinity X8 server run by Ewington from a Tiger Touch II console.

These effects were further enhanced as the db1s 15 powerful LED cells were manipulated by being mapped, with strobing and intensity run as a lighting fixture by Edwin Croft from his Avo Pearl Expert console.

Ewington ran a selection of original content through the fixtures while Croft added a whole new dimension of patterning, spirals and swirls, which really brought a 3D element as well as intense luminosity to the output.

Working together, the two of them effectively made the db1s a moving lightsource with a huge repertoire of individual, never-repeated liquid and flowing effects and looks in a wide range of rich, distinctive colours.

Combining the two modes of operation enabled Croft to chop the lightsources in and out, so when db1s were the only light on in the room they delivered huge slices and beams of textured light.

Ewington stated that he approached the media server almost like a morphing gobo. While the video content will always stay on the ‘surface’ of the db1, the beams of light shooting out from the LEDs inside and being moved by the video means the units can work as a perfect companion to any moving or static lightsource also on the rig.

The precision of the db1s LED lightsource when pulsed means that the eye can see the different colours changing as the light is emitted, giving nanosecond hits of incredible split-colour light.

Ewington commented: “I had the privilege of designing and operating at these two very special nights. It was an exciting and creative journey made all the better by a great team working with me behind the scenes. Good on them for having the balls to try something new!”

A week earlier, Ewington had operated 24 db1s for a Charlatans gig at Castlefields Arena in Manchester, when he ran them more in conventional lightsource.

After that he reprogrammed the desk so he could access different media server clips on the bump buttons, ideal for the more ravey and improvisational style of operation appropriate for 10x10.

24 DB1s,  an Avolites Tiger Touch II console and Ai media servers were the perfect partners for The Charlatans, as they performed at Manchester's Castlefield Bowl for Summer in the City.

Appearing after a special event at Hotel Football the previous night, the band captivated the audience with an assortment of crowd-pleasers from their extensive catalogue, as well as new material from their latest album, Modern Nature.

Andy Liddle programmed and operated the traditional lighting also using an Avolites Tiger Touch II console, which controlled an array of lighting fixtures including Martin MAC Vipers, Quantum Washes, Atomic 3000s and Clay Paky Sharpys supplied and rigged by Adlib Lighting with a floor package from Lite Alternative consisting of Solaris Flares, i-Pix Satellite IIs and SGM X5s.

Chris Ewington of i-Pix programmed and operated the video content for the show, using 24 of the amazing Db1 video and lighting projectors. Designed by Ewington, even the simplest, plainest, or even monochrome graphics, are impressive to see projected from the Db1, in which a light valve projects a light forward from the screen in a defined, soft-edged beam.

For the DB1 fixtures, driven by both DMX and video input, this was a first high-profile UK show. Prior to this, as many as 64 units had been used in Japan.

Control of the Db1s came in the shape of an Avolites Tiger Touch II console, which Ewington used in conjunction with the Ai S8 media server to send content to the 24 i-Pix fixtures, supplied and rigged by DBN, with AtoV supplying signal management for the DB1 array.

"As a hometown show, this concert was a big deal for the band, and as such was a good opportunity for try something different. I got a big thanks off the management and Andy who were very happy!"
